Alberto Aquilani is seriously considering leaving Italy

Alberto Aquilani is seriously considering leaving Italy once again after not being offered a contract extension at Fiorentina so far.

The Italian midfielder’s contract with the Italian outfit ends this summer and it is looking highly likely that he will leave the club. Considering his age and the numerous injuries that have hampered his career, clubs are understood to be cautious about signing him on a long-term contract. However, the player’s agent has confirmed that he has had a lot of interest from clubs abroad and that a move could be confirmed if Fiorentina do not change their stance over the next few weeks.

After coming close to capturing a Champions League spot in Vincenzo Montella’s first season at the club, Fiorentina once again missed out narrowly on a top three spot. The club finished in the fourth spot and will hence be playing in the Europa League as opposed to the premier European competition. Still, this is a step in the right direction for the club, as it gives them the prestige to be able to attract big players. Aquilani came to Florence in 2012 from Liverpool. His time at the Merseyside club was a forgetful one, as he endured numerous injuries during his three seasons at Anfield.

"We did speak to Fiorentina, but they are dealing with the coach problem, so have to wait. There is interest from abroad. His career speaks for itself, as he is only 31 years old and at the height of his physical vigour," said agent Andrea D'Amico. Aquilani was once regarded as the crown jewel in Italian football. He was seen as the future replacement for Andrea Pirlo when he was coming through the ranks at Roma. Since the departure from the Italian capital, Aquilani’s career has been on a downhill pattern.
