EURO 2020: FRANCE ELIMINATED ON PENALTIES

World champions France have been eliminated on penalties by Switzerland in the round of 16 stage at the Euro 2020 tournament currently ongoing across several European cities. The Swiss are through to the quarterfinals of the tournament at the expense of France in what's one of the most surprising results of the tournament.

World champions France were the tournament favourites before a ball was kicked at Euro 2020 but the former European Championship winners have been far from convincing since the tournament started earlier this month.

The front trio of Antoine Griezmann, Karim Benzema and KylianMbappe promised so much on paper but delivered little at the tournament. HarisSeferovic gave Switzerland a stunning lead at the half-time interval having scored the only goal of the first half on 15 minutes.

Switzerland had the chance to double their lead ten minutes into the second half only to miss that opportunity when left-back Ricardo Rodriguez had his penalty saved by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. 243 seconds later, France had gone 2-1 up courtesy the brace from Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. Benzema produced a sensational flick before finding the back of the net off the assist from KylianMbappe to level proceedings for Les Blues on 57 minutes before the deflected cross from Antoine Griezmann was headed home by Benzema two minutes later as France led in the game for the first time.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba added an excellent third goal for France with 15 minutes left on the clock and it seemed like the world champions would cruise into the last eight but Switzerland had other ideas. HarisSeferovic scored his second goal of the match for Switzerland with nine minutes left on the clock before substitute Mario Gavranovic snatched a third goal for the Swiss team with virtually the last kick of regulation time to force extra time. Substitute Kingsley Coman then hit the crossbar as he could have won the game for France in regulation time. In the end, France went on to lose 5-4 on penalties.

Barcelona attacker Antoine Griezmann would have been one of the penalty takers but he had been taken off for Moussa Sissoko with two minutes of normal time left. PSG attacker KylianMbappe was the villain for France after missing his penalty during shootout to crash out of the Euro 2020 tournament.
