Francesco Totti Teases Barcelona After Roma’s Champions League Triumph
Roma favourite Francesco Totti has taken a vile dig at Barcelona after the Giallorossi managed to oust them from this season’s Champions League via the away-goal rule. The Catalan Giants were favourites to progress to the semi-final of the competition after taking a 4-1 advantage from the first-leg but they surprisingly failed to show up in the return game where they succumbed to a shock 3-0 away defeat.
In an Italian talk show, Totti was asked about the moment and he could not hide the amazement over the result, he said: “The return leg seemed to be a useless one. Everybody thought we’d have been eliminated. Barcelona were happy to have been drawn with Roma. The result of the first game was expected by everybody. Not the second one though.I still gave goosebumps when I watch the images of the game. We deserved to win, we deserved to go through. It was a memorable game.”
Barcelona were obviously expected to make progress into the top four of the elite competition and the result would have come surely as a shock for the club’s faithful. Despite this, they have plenty to play for as they could still win a domestic double in the form of the Spanish La Liga and Copa del Rey title.
Meanwhile for Roma, their chances of winning the Champions League remain slender irrespective of their Barcelona triumph. The Capital outfit have been pitted against an in-form and attack-minded Liverpool side in the semi-final and they have a huge task on their hands to contain Mohamed Salah, who was once of their top recruits.
Since leaving the Giallorossi last summer, Salah has developed leaps and bounds under Jurgen Klopp and Roma need to produce a strong resolute defensive performance in order to restrict the attacker from scoring. The Egyptian has netted 39 goals across all competitions this term and eight of those have come in the Champions League.
