GRIEZMANN: FAR FROM MY BEST
Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has admitted that he has not been at his best for the club this season even though he registered a decisive brace in their 3-2 win over Real Valladolid.
The striker continues to shine for Atletico but he feels his form has dipped slightly from the previous season and that the long and difficult year is weighing him down.
Antoine Griezmann made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time with a well taken penalty which beat the Valladolid goalkeeper so easily but the hosts fired back in the second half with an amazing resurgence – scoring two goals to bring the game level.
With 10 minutes left, it was the French striker who settled the game for the hosts, receiving a delightful through ball before beating the opposition goalkeeper at his near post. The goal happened to be his 125th goal in 300 La Liga appearances.
The player has scored 10 goals in 23 appearances so far this season in all competitions but he believes he fallen off the pace as it has been a really long year, in which he participated in the 2018 World Cup and the Europa League, and winning both titles.
“Speaking in a news conference, he said he could still improve in certain areas of his game“, adding that he was yet to reach his peak. He hinted that his long schedule that started since last year at the club to the “World Cup winning French“side and back to Atletico has made him “short of speed.”
He is glad that he was able to get two goals in a crucial game as such, despite the “very long year” he has had. Griezmann’s next game will be an intense clash against Espanyol before they head into the mid-season break.
