New Roma winger reveals awe when meeting Totti

AS Roma wideman Cengiz Under has spoken about his move to the club in the summer and also revealed the nerves he felt at being welcomed to Italian football by no less than the legend that is Francesco Totti.

The Turkish international arrived at the Stadio Olimpico in a £12million deal from Super Lig side Medipol Basaksehir after a string of eye-catching performances last season. He was a much-sought commodity by a host of clubs in Europe but chose the Italian capital.

On his arrival at the club he was greeted by the man they call Il Gladiatore by the Roma faithful and he youngster freely admits that he was in awe of Totti when they first met.

“I still can’t quite believe it. He is a legend, an inspiration. Having Totti welcome me to Roma on my first day is difficult to even describe,” the 20-year-old told the Guardian.

“I can’t tell you how excited I was. I felt like a fan meeting an idol, he has that effect. Totti is something else, he represents something more than football. On and off the field he is a legend. He is a name synonymous with Roma.”

Totti, of course, will be forever associated with AS Roma having spent his entire professional career at the club. Universally regarded as Roma’s greatest ever player, he made his debut as a 16-year-old in 1992 before embarking on a journey that’s he would see him play an incredible 25 seasons in the Stadio Olimpico.

He scored 250 goals in Serie A, the second biggest haul in history and would go on to score 316 goals in all competitions. The 41-year-Old was capped 58 times by Italy scoring nine goals.

He won one Serie A title and two Coppa Italia as well as two Supercoppa Italiana titles with the club. Since hanging up his boots he has now taken a place on the Roma board as a director.
