REVIEW: EL CLASICO

Real Madrid ended a seven game in El Clasico without a win in a classy way with a vintage performance at the Santiago Bernabeu against Barcelona on Sunday. They won 2-0 at home, with second half goals from teenager Vinicius Jr and a late goal from Mariano. The striker added the second goal seconds after coming off the bench.

Zinedine Zidane and his charges entered Sunday in second place and two points behind the Catalan giants Barcelona in the standings. The win takes Los Blancos to the top of the table with 56 points one point ahead of eternal rival Barca on 55 points.

It was a frustrating night for Barcelona as Lionel Messi missed a golden opportunity. Messi was not the only culprit to miss, as did Antoine Griezmann, who missed a good chance to put the Blaugrana ahead in the first half. Barca finished with four shots on goal. On the other side, Real Madrid looked like the sharper team throughout the night. Zidane men registered 13 shots, while four of their shots were on target. Real were patient with their build up play, and they stretched the Barca backline on various occasions, but the first goal did not arrive until the 71st minute.

Kroos had the ball in the Barca's half, he pointed to the direction he wanted Vinicius Jr to make his run, the young attacker got the message, and made the run to receive the pass. The Brazilian still had it all to do and he did it with precision albeit with some deflection off the sliding Gerard Pique. The youngster becomes the youngest scorer in El Clasico in the process overtaken Lionel Messi in the process.

Barca threw all they had to get an equalizer, but Madrid's defense stood firm. Marcelo made a last-ditch tackle to deny Messi who was through on goal. Mariano Diaz added the gloss to the score line seconds after coming on for Karim Benzema.
