Should Francesco Totti retire?

This is the debate that is happening around Roma at the moment.

With their iconic player aged 39 nearing the end of his contract, the question is whether he should be given another contract or be released by the club?

Francesco Totti enjoys a cult status not only within Roma fans but also within Italy, and the pressure is mounting on the Roma president James Pallota. The president has been filmed as saying that Totti should seriously consider retiring at the end of his contract.

Pallota recognizes that Francesco Totti is one of the best Italian players of all times, but unfortunately, he is not becoming any younger. The president is prepared to give him a role within the club, most likely in the top management of the team. However, there are rumors that Totti might be leaving for the United States to play in the MLS.

According to Totti’s wife, the striker is considering retiring at the end of the season despite the debate going on.

However, Totti himself complain of his lack of playing time with Roma. Indeed, the striker does not form part of Luciano Spalleti’s plan and his complaints resulted in him being cut off from Roma’s squad. Thanks to Pallotta's intervention he was reintroduced to the first team and had form part of the squad ever since.

In fairness, Roma has not done badly in recent times in the absence of Francesco Totti. In Mohamed Salah, Stephan El Shaarawy and Diego Perotti, they have more than enough firepower in attack and should be able to carve open the most stubborn defense.

For the last 2 months, Roma has been in great form and are currently third in the Italian League, and some pundits even believe that they have an outside chance to win the title.
